Malaysian ISPs
More than a year has passed since they Streamyx (TM Net Sdn Bhd) started shaping P2P traffic. How is the situation today? The service is still bad after because they have not bothered to upgrade their servers much at all. Just try pinging any server outside Malaysia and you will see huge amounts of latency. On the other hand, their marketing and sales division have been working overtime to get more customers. Their infrastructure is unable to keep up with the demand. With such poor service from Streamyx, most customers would have switched to other ISPs by now. Unfortunately, TM Net controls all last mile connections in Malaysia. This leads to a unhealthy ISP monopoly . No other ISP comes close to the coverage that Streamyx has.
So Streamyx customers are left unhappy and the TM Net monopoly just doesn’t care. In fact, one of the rumours coming from inside Streamyx recently is that they are actually DOWNGRADING the internet service for HOME users while upgrading the connection for Business users.
So, wake up call for all Malaysian ISPs. Try to provide better service than what Streamyx is doing, and all the users will be flocking to you in no time. Better still, if you would just advertise ‘Unthrottled P2P connections after midnight’, you will see a HUGE jump in clients and customers. It’s a win-win situation for you and the customer. Noone sends business e-mails while they are asleep. P2P users get what they want. Big cash cow here. Time to get moving!
Streamyx Throttling
Well, we all know streamyx throttles torrents. Throttles badly it does! What can we do about it? If you’re using utorrent, a simple change in your preferences will help. Here’s how:
1. Open utorrent.
2. Click on Options
3. Click on Preferences
4. Select Bittorrent.
5. At the bottom, you’ll see Protocol Encryption. Set Outgoing to Forced-This will make sure that all the data that you are uploading is encrypted.
6. Uncheck ‘Allow incoming legacy connections’- This will make sure that you only receive encrypted data.
Why do you want to do this? Streamyx heavily throttles torrents. It scans ports and data for anything remotely related to torrents and it caps/blocks its speed. That’s why you want the information coming in to be encrypted, AND you want the information going out to be encrypted as well. Or else Streamyx will go “AhA! So that’s the port you’re using for bittorrent. Let’s Cap that then, shall we?”
